EC Denies Finding Intel Guilty of Antitrust Violations

Jonathan Todd Called a Story By the Financial Times Deutschland "Irresponsible Journalism"

The European Commission’s spokesman Jonathan Todd called a story by the Financial Times Deutschland - claiming that the EC had reached a provisional antitrust decision against Intel - “irresponsible journalism.”

Todd said “no provisional or internal decision” had been made and that the EC’s investigation was still ongoing.

Citing unnamed sources in Brussels, the FT Deutschland said that the EC had decided to stop Intel’s OEM chip discounts, forbid the company from subsidizing retailers’ advertising costs if exclusivity was exchanged and publish its official decision toward the end of the summer. It said the EC could fine Intel up to 10% of its annual sales, roughly $4.1 billion.

If the FT was paying attention it would know that retailers and coop isn’t covered in the statement of objections that the EC issued to Intel last year and if the EC’s subsequent raids on European retailers turned up anything the regulator would have to issue another SO.
