SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BEA Systems, Inc. , a world leader in enterprise infrastructure software, today announced that Avis Budget Group, Inc. , a leading provider of vehicle rental services, is building out a service-oriented architecture (SOA) powered by BEA WebLogic(R) Server.
Avis Budget, whose 30,000 employees support operations in more than 70 countries, has a long history of innovation. The company's innovative spirit extends to information technology, which it utilizes to distinguish the Avis and Budget brands in a highly competitive marketplace.
The SOA, known as the OMEGA (One Merged Enterprise and Global Architecture) platform, is built on BEA technology and is designed to help ensure a positive and consistent customer experience and keep loyal renters coming back time and again. The first application deployed on OMEGA was E-Receipts, which provides convenience for customers by allowing them to receive electronic receipts via email.
"Our investment in OMEGA and the apps that run on top of it is intended to enhance our strong competitive position," said John Turato, vice president of technology at Avis Budget. "We want a flexible business platform that enables us to turn innovative ideas into reality quickly and reliably."
OMEGA supports all customer contact channels -- call centers, airport rental counters, standalone facilities, and the Internet. And, Avis Budget is able to reuse services created for one application on subsequent projects. For example, drivers who need rental cars while their personal cars are being repaired can often have their insurance companies pay for the rentals. Avis Budget is using the notification service originally built for E-Receipts to communicate with insurance carriers and drivers about payment authorization.
"Reusing proven software components can accelerate project timelines, reduce costs, and improve outcomes," said Turato. "E-Receipts is a tangible example of the transformative influence of SOA. In the past, making a core business process such as rental returns paperless would have been impossible. Now, it's reality. As we have one success after another with OMEGA-based applications, the company's confidence in SOA is growing. Lines of business are bringing ideas to us and asking us to implement them on OMEGA."
