Terracotta went into open source mode in December, and has seen numerous benefits from its new approach, according to company co-founder and CTO Ari Zilka (pictured), in an interview with
SYS-CON.TV at the recent JavaOne 2007 conference in San Francisco. Zilka noted that downloads from its site increased from 1,000 to 6,000 per month, and that the company is already reaping benefits from members of the open source community who are learning more about Terracotta and what it does.
The full SYS-CON.TV interview is scheduled to be available online by the end of May.
The company focuses on clustering for Java, providing scalability and availability for the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). On the eve of JavaOne 2007, Terracotta announced the integration of its clustering solution with GlassFish, the enterprise-class open source Java Application Server. The combination of the two products provides developers with a one-two punch for building and deploying highly available and scalable Java-based enterprise applications built on lightweight, open source components, the company said.
Terracotta’s powerful runtime clustering technology fills a market void as companies seek low cost, lightweight alternatives to proprietary solutions, the company noted, and Terracotta’s runtime JVM-level clustering solution offers developers an innovative yet simple way to achieve high availability and scalability for Java applications.
The GlassFish Application Server is a product of the GlassFish community which develops free, open source, production-quality, enterprise software. Now, with the integration of Terracotta and GlassFish, developers can quickly implement enterprise-class application infrastructures based on open source, lightweight stacks. “True to the spirit of open source communities, Terracotta aims to support the leading J2EE application servers to provide developers with the flexibility and interoperability necessary to successfully build enterprise applications,” according to Zilka. “The integration of Terracotta with GlassFish will accelerate the adoption of open source technologies and strengthen the efforts of our respective communities.”
