The Six Must-Have Essentials for Building High Performance Teams

Drive Success from the Inside Out

Successful teams are what makes organizations succeed. It could be a project team, a sales team, a marketing team, or a myriad of other types of teams. The point is, if your organization has teams that are successful, result oriented, and cohesive, you are on the way to success. A challenge, in the first place however,is to build that high performance dependable team. Here are six essentials of ensuring that your teams are the best that can be !

Break the Ice - Socialize !

Get your team mates acquainted with each other. Do an introductory session, a bowling night, a lunch or anything in your means to bring everyone together. Team building is a delicate process which needs to be undertaken to get a great team spirit going. After the Storming phase, the team will start to Form and then Normalize into having a team mindset.

Assign Roles - Give Responsibility !

In the atmosphere of the team, assigning the right role is key in ensuring that each individual member performs their task and fulfil the needs of their position. A weak link in a team can be disastrous and can drag down the whole team, no matter how effective other members of the team are. Assign roles and responsibilities carefully. Develop a personality/career profile of your team members to know the tasks they like or dislike and delegate accordingly. Build on their strengths !

Lead as an Example - A Good one that is !

A team leader is someone that exemplifies the role. Be a leader in a true way and say what you mean and mean what you say. This includes delivering on all your promises, fighting for what is right and motivating people when the times are tough. Team leaders need to be provided the right leadership training to excel in their roles and to propel success through their respective teams. When you need inspiration, think of leaders such as Napoleon, Attila the Hun or modern counterparts such as Michael Dell, Warren Buffet, Jeff Bezos and others.

Measure Results - Provide Feedback !

If you cannot measure it, you cannot improve it. Measuring team success overall is a combined component of measuring individual success and overall team progress. Make sure that each individual in your team has their goals, tasks, and responsibilities evaluated and measured regularly.

Value Opinion - Value expertise !

Listen to your teams for feedback. This is key in getting an insight into multiple things such as improving processes, eliminating personality clashes, and staying on top of the main objective of your team - to be productive ! People who are not listened to feel under appreciated and may not work to their highest potential.

Focus on Relationships - They are everything !

Business works on relationships. A good one can get you a lot of success and bad ones, no matter how hard you try, will get you nowhere. Build a solid relationship with your team members. Encourage open communication, and get everyone to park their egos at the door. Communicate the true value of success with the team and help them build relationships with each other and buy into the team mindset. This will drive success at the speed of light !

Team success is an important factor in the success of an organization. For managers it is very important to focus on the bigger picture and drive success. Every weak relationship within the team should be made stronger and overall the teams should be encouraged, valued and respected.
