Le déploiement d’une version stable d’OpenStack à venir

Le 28 mai dernier avait lieu à Paris l’OpenStack in action 5!, un ensemble de conférences immanquables pour bon nombre de DSI (Dirigeant de Services Informatiques) et d’OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer ou fabricant d’équipement d’origine en français) sur la technologie OpenStack. Provectio était présent à cet événement avec l’espoir d’en savoir un peu plus sur les projets de la fondation dans sa capacité à proposer une version stable de sa solution.

OpenStack, c’est quoi ?

Pour clarifier un peu les choses, voici un petit rappel sur les bases du projet informatique OpenStack. A quoi sert-il ?  En quoi est-il essentiel pour le Cloud computing ?

OpenStack est une plate-forme IaaS Open Source de gestion d’infrastructure Cloud qui apporte des ingrédients essentiels à la mise en place et la gestion pour la construction d’un nuage informatique. Elle s’impose de plus en plus comme une solution alternative à Amazon Web Service (AWS), le géant du secteur.

Cette technologie fonctionne en synergie avec de nombreuses solutions, au niveau de la virtualisation (KVM, Xen, Hyper-V et VMWare), du stockage (Ceph, LVM) et du réseau (Open vSwitck, Openflow et ML2).

L’OpenStack in action 5! était l’occasion pour l’OpenStack Foundation de présenter la toute dernière version de sa pile logicielle. Icehouse compte plus de 350 fonctionnalités supplémentaires par rapport à sa précédente mouture, Havana.

Un déploiement qui tarde à se démocratiser

Selon l’analyste de la société Gartner, Alessandro Perilli, «la pénétration d’OpenStack dans les grandes entreprises est encore minime ». En effet, malgré tous les gros titres dans les médias, il est encore trop tôt pour beaucoup de société de déployer la solution dans son intégralité. Les géants du net qu’ils l’ont fait n’ont pas eu le choix de le faire car ils avaient un besoin en terme de stockage et de gestion de la donnée.

En France, aucun hébergeur reconnu n’a encore déployé la solution à grande échelle, même si on peut citer les deux nouveaux du Cloud français (CloudWatt et Numergy), pour qui le démarrage n’a pas été simple néanmoins. A ce jour, il y a finalement peu de spécialistes OEM sur la solution en mesure de décrire les bonnes pratiques de mise en œuvre.

Cette réticence s’explique en partie par le fait que la technologie OpenStack est encore jeune et qu’il manque encore des briques de stabilité. Elle évolue vite et peut-être même trop vite, ce qui freine sa mise en place. Beaucoup craignent de devoir recommencer leur mise en œuvre tous les 6 mois dans le but d’apporter de nouvelles fonctionnalités et correction de bugs à la solution.

Vers une version stable d’OpenStack et une éventuelle labellisation

La démocratisation tant attendue de la technologie pourrait avoir lieu dans les mois à venir, passant une labellisation du produit que tous les acteurs de ce projet souhaitent ardemment. D’après Nicolas Barcet, d’Enovance, « un futur label OpenStack-compatible pourra servir à identifier sur les app-stores en ligne toute application SaaS capable de venir s’exécuter dans un cloud privé ».

La dernière et 9ème version lancée en avril 2014, nommée Icehouse, commence à prendre en compte les update de version en supporte également des mises à jour en continue (rolling updates). Cela minimisera l’impact des processus de migration des workloads (charge de travail) et des changements de code sur les autres technologies, ce qui démontre déjà un effort dans la volonté de stabiliser le framework Cloud.
