IoT Cloud Computing – Building the On Demand, Real-time Enterprise

We have entered an age where IoT Cloud Computing will become the dominant form of enterprise IT architecture

Like every one I am updating my terminology to reflect the shift that occurred – Business and technical executives immediately get that when combined with a world of smart, connected devices then Cloud computing only makes more sense.

We have entered an age where IoT Cloud Computing will become the dominant form of enterprise IT architecture.

Smart devices aren’t much use if they aren’t sharing their feeds with some kind of enterprise system, and so new forms of middleware as well as entirely new forms of ERP will emerge too. In short how will that RFID device on the tin of beans ordered by your smart fridge, actually place the order into the supermarket logistics systems?

Vendors like SAP will come up with answers and this process will spur a huge cycle of investment and innovation in the enterprise IT market, typically the engine of stock market growth, so it’s going to be a massive driver of new economic growth too.

Enormous volumes of Big Data will be produced and you ain’t processing that on your phone, so we’ll only see the Cloud grow as if switching up to a steroids-based diet.

Cloud Computing is an ideal platform for helping accelerate this trend, not least because the software required to manage these sensor networks of course needs to be run somewhere and be maintained by someone.

This introduces the SaaS field of ‘M2M Cloud’.

As described in these articles here and here the software that can operate these ‘Machine to Machine’ scenarios can, like any software, be operated via a SaaS model so that large enterprise customers can harness the power of the trend but without large upfront capital outlay or heavy HR requirements.

Real-time Enterprise
Ultimately all of this will enable the ‘Real-Time Enterprise’, an organization that doesn’t run IT that shows them static, aging information entered manually by a human, but instead feeds of real-time data like stock market dealers watching the ticker tapes, generated by smart devices.

Back in 2002 Vinod Khosla, one of the elite of the Silicon Valley entrepreneur community (co-founded Sun Microsystems among others), wrote a white paper called the Real-Time Enterprise.

At the same time I also wrote a similar paper entitled Building an On Demand Enterprise, which was based around the same principles. We both described utilizing a ‘loosely coupled’ and federated business model via the SOA (Service Oriented Architecture), to build more agile organizational structures.

As the Founder of Sun Microsystems Vinod is responsible for a wave of innovation headlined by the term ‘the Network is the Computer’, a vision of this world coined back in the early 1980′s.

In short when all devices act as one big virtual computer, then this type of real-time, smart data flow becomes possible, and that capability naturally offers up equally new organizational models that can exploit them, aka the Real-Time Enterprise.

Now in 2014 those 2002 ideas are reality and that presents a golden age opportunity for entrepreneurs and also corporate senior executives who want to pioneer disruptive models in their industries.
