"While we see strong adoption of AJAX globally, our latest research indicates the developer community in the Emerging Markets is embracing this programming model most aggressively," stated John Andrews, President of Evans Data. Andrews will be discussing the data from this survey, entitled the "Emerging Markets Development Survey," at AJAXWorld Conference & Expo 2006, being held 2-4 October, 2006 at the Santa Clara Convention Center, CA.
"Given that these developers are spending a majority of their time developing Web Applications, we only see this trend continuing," Andrews added.
Over 400 developers from Eastern Europe, Brazil, China, and India contributed to the study. Brazil is breaking through the pack with 25% of developers using the technique. China has the lowest adoption rate with a little over 16%, closer to North American levels of AJAX adoption which are just below 18%.
There is a greater disparity with PHP use in Emerging Markets. The largest number of developers using the language can be found in Eastern Europe (39%). India and Brazil have similar usage at a little over 31%. In contrast, only 21% of Chinese developers are utilizing PHP. In North America, 35% of developers are using PHP.
Other findings from the 2006 Emerging Markets Development Survey of more than 400 developers:
- Forty-two percent of respondents are using Flash, a considerably higher percentage than is found in North America.
- Increased usage of Linux for embedded operating systems is expected across all regions. China is leading the way with 39% of developers there projecting growth, while the Eastern European region is the area showing the greatest resistance.
- Nine out of ten emerging market developers use Windows as the primary platform on which they host development.
