Adaptive Computing, the largest provider of High-Performance Computing (HPC) and private cloud workload management software, today announced the winners of its first annual Adaptie Awards. Given to organizations and individuals that continually push the technological envelope, the Adaptie Awards were presented at MoabCon 2013, Adaptive Computing’s annual user conference in Park City, Utah.
Adaptie recipients included:
Best Use of Moab in a Private Cloud – Bank of America
The world’s leading financial institution was honored for using Adaptive Computing’s Moab Cloud Suite for its innovative, high density, service oriented virtualized compute platform – one of the most advanced, large scale privately managed ventures of its kind.
Best Use of Moab in HPC – National Oceanic and Atmospheric
The federal agency was honored for its pioneering use of Adaptive Computing’s Moab HPC Suite to develop better models for predicting climate variability and change.
Lifetime Achievement – Don Maxwell, Oak Ridge National Laboratory
The HPC systems team lead at ORNL was honored for his contributions to the HPC industry. Maxwell was instrumental in providing both requirements and testing for the initial port of Moab to the Cray X-series platform. He was awarded the ACM Gordon Bell Prize in 2008 as a member of a team led by Thomas Schulthess that used the ORNL Jaguar supercomputer to achieve 400+ TFlop/s sustained performance. Jaguar ran the Moab HPC Suite, and now, Maxwell uses the Moab HPC Suite on Titan, ORNL’s latest supercomputer, which was declared the world’s fastest in the latest semiannual TOP500 list, securing the No. 1 position.
“I am deeply honored by this recognition,” said Maxwell. “As a long-time Adaptive customer, it is very rewarding to collaborate alongside them on industry challenges and seek solutions to the world’s most complex scientific problems – from climate change to efficient fuels. Moab is the perfect complement for our system and has enabled me to continually stretch the capabilities of supercomputing throughout my career.”
“The Adaptie Awards provide a platform to recognize our customers for their cutting-edge achievements in the HPC and cloud communities,” said Rob Clyde, CEO of Adaptive Computing. “The myriad applications of Moab is truly inspiring, and we are proud to count such esteemed individuals and organizations as our customers.”

With so much going on in this space you could be forgiven for thinking you were always working with yesterday’s technologies. So much change, so quickly. What do you do if you have to build a solution from the ground up that is expected to live in the field for at least 5-10 years? This is the challenge we faced when we looked to refresh our existing 10-year-old custom hardware stack to measure the fullness of trash cans and compactors.

Thomas Bitman of Gartner wrote a blog post last year about why OpenStack projects fail. In that article, he outlined three particular metrics which together cause 60% of OpenStack projects to fall short of expectations: Wrong people (31% of failures): a successful cloud needs commitment both from the operations team as well as from "anchor" tenants. Wrong processes (19% of failures): a successful cloud automates across silos in the software development lifecycle, not just within silos.

[session] Architecting for the Cloud By @RagsS | @CloudExpo @IBMBluemix #Cloud #Docker #Microservices
As the world moves toward more DevOps and Microservices, application deployment to the cloud ought to become a lot simpler. The Microservices architecture, which is the basis of many new age distributed systems such as OpenStack, NetFlix and so on, is at the heart of Cloud Foundry - a complete developer-oriented Platform as a Service (PaaS) that is IaaS agnostic and supports vCloud, OpenStack and AWS. Serverless computing is revolutionizing computing. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Raghav...

Monitoring of Docker environments is challenging. Why? Because each container typically runs a single process, has its own environment, utilizes virtual networks, or has various methods of managing storage. Traditional monitoring solutions take metrics from each server and applications they run. These servers and applications running on them are typically very static, with very long uptimes. Docker deployments are different: a set of containers may run many applications, all sharing the resource...

The following fictional case study is a composite of actual horror stories I’ve heard over the years. Unfortunately, this scenario often occurs when in-house integration teams take on the complexities of DevOps and ALM integration with an enterprise service bus (ESB) or custom integration. It is written from the perspective of an enterprise architect tasked with leading an organization’s effort to adopt Agile to become more competitive. The company has turned to Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) as ...
