SUNNYVALE, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/28/13 -- Real-Time Innovations (RTI), the real-time infrastructure software company, today announced a technology collaboration with Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions (CWCDS), long established technology leader in the development of rugged electronic modules and systems for defense and aerospace applications. The initiative broadens the leading implementation of the Object Management Group (OMG) Data Distribution Service (DDS) standard within the embedded defense market.
CWCDS is part of the Curtiss-Wright Corporation, whose roots began with aviation legends Glenn Curtiss and the Wright brothers. Curtiss-Wright has a long history of manufacturing innovative products and services for the defense, energy, industrial and commercial industries. Digital signal processing (DSP), or measuring, filtering and compressing real-world analog signals, is mission critical in the Aerospace and Defense market. The Curtiss-Wright CHAMP-AV8 dual Intel®Core®-i7 DSP board is now making use of RTI's Connext Data Distribution Service (DDS) solution to simplify and enhance the use of digital signal processing in the harshest environments.
With today's announcement, RTI and Curtiss-Wright extend DDS beyond the high performance computing (HPC) market to embedded defense. RTI Connext DDS bundles basic tools for data visualization and system-of-systems debugging to enhance productivity in mission-critical systems. With Connext DDS, embedded military platform integrators can reduce the time, cost and risk of adopting a real-time Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Open Architecture (OA). Curtiss-Wright now offers RTI Connext DDS as an additional component in its High Performance Embedded Computing (HPEC) software platform, which is subject to extensive testing and verification to insure maturity and robustness.
The CHAMP-AV8 board coupled with RTI Connext DDS puts high-performance digital signal processing close to the sensor in the harshest environments. The CHAMP-AV8 is used by sensor integrators to transform raw data into actionable information that improves situational awareness. Connext DDS enables this information to be disseminated to various subscribers according to their unique quality-of-service requirements. DDS is now being referenced in defense industry open platform architecture definitions such as the Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE) Reference Architecture. RTI Connext DDS on the CHAMP-AV8 supports Fedora 15 and Red Hat 6.1 Linux, with RTI Connext DDS available as static or linkable libraries.
Comments on the News
"Curtiss-Wright has invested significant resources to create an open architecture HPEC software platform that runs on highly-ruggedized, COTS computing infrastructure," said Lynn Bamford, senior vice president and general manager of Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions. "RTI's technology provides an interoperable open architecture (IOA) middleware that will enable our defense customers to process and publish sensor data in real-time. With Curtiss-Wright and RTI's technologies working together, warfighters will receive the real-time data that they need in order to complete their mission."
"Teaming with Curtiss-Wright to extend DDS to the embedded defense market and enhance digital signal processing delivers another proof point for open architecture data distribution in military and aerospace computing," said Curt Schacker, chief commercial officer at RTI. "Interoperable open architecture (IOA) enables disparate systems to fit together, making it easier for developers to deploy technology across multiple platforms, operating systems and over time to accommodate ongoing product evolution and revisions. IOA is the future of defense procurement and we're happy to lay the groundwork for interoperability through joint initiatives like this one."
