Foliage Awarded Multi-Year Contract With U.S. Department of Transportation's Research and Innovative Technology Administration, Volpe

Five-Year Contract Provides Custom Software Development Services

BURLINGTON, MA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/22/13 -- Foliage, a technology consulting and engineering services company, announced today that it is one of three suppliers awarded a software development contract by Volpe, The National Transportation Systems Center. Part of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Research and Innovative Technology Administration, Volpe is a critical resource for innovation in transportation with a mission to improve the nation's transportation system by anticipating emerging issues.

This indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract has a five-year performance period and a value of $10 million. Under the terms of the contract, Foliage will compete for task orders to develop additions and enhancements of service-oriented (SOA) geospatial modeling tools. Initially, Foliage will focus on the development and modification of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Graphical User Interface (GUI) elements of the measurement and modeling tools for airport noise, local and global emissions, and aviation economics. Foliage anticipates that this work will expand over the course of the contract term to include other Department of Transportation administrations and non-DOT entities.

"For more than 10 years, Foliage has worked with the Volpe Center providing professional software development services in the areas of traffic noise modeling and aviation environmental analysis modeling," said Jonathan Gray, SVP for Foliage's aerospace and defense practice. "It's gratifying to see how our work helps the Volpe Center realize the full benefits of their modeling tools. We are excited to be partnering with Volpe once again."

Matt and I first met in the Summer of 2014 at DevOpsDays Minneapolis. My first introduction came when he (and several other DoD alums) participated in an impressive round of DevOps Karaoke. Matt gave an IGNITE talk on day two of the event titled “How to Hire Your First DevOp” as well. I learned during that event that he co-hosted a DevOps specific podcast that was gaining in popularity. It made perfect sense. Not long after Minneapolis, I began trading emails with the organizers of DevOpsDays C...

Right off the bat, Newman advises that we should "think of microservices as a specific approach for SOA in the same way that XP or Scrum are specific approaches for Agile Software development". These analogies are very interesting because my expectation was that microservices is a pattern. So I might infer that microservices is a set of process techniques as opposed to an architectural approach. Yet in the book, Newman clearly includes some elements of concept model and architecture as well as p...

Growth hacking is common for startups to make unheard-of progress in building their business. Career Hacks can help Geek Girls and those who support them (yes, that's you too, Dad!) to excel in this typically male-dominated world. Get ready to learn the facts: Is there a bias against women in the tech / developer communities? Why are women 50% of the workforce, but hold only 24% of the STEM or IT positions? Some beginnings of what to do about it!

Let's just nip the conflation of these terms in the bud, shall we?

"MIcro" is big these days. Both microservices and microsegmentation are having and will continue to have an impact on data center architecture, but not necessarily for the same reasons. There's a growing trend in which folks - particularly those with a network background - conflate the two and use them to mean the same thing.

They are not.

One is about the application. The other, the network. T...

I’ve been thinking a bit about microservices (μServices) recently. My immediate reaction is to think: “Isn’t this just yet another new term for the same stuff, Web Services->SOA->APIs->Microservices?” Followed shortly by the thought, “well yes it is, but there are some important differences/distinguishing factors.” Microservices is an evolutionary paradigm born out of the need for simplicity (i.e., get away from the ESB) and alignment with agile (think DevOps) and scalable (think Containerizati...
