CHATSWORTH, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/07/13 -- MRV Communications, Inc. (OTCQB: MRVC) ("MRV" or the "Company"), a leading provider of optical communications network infrastructure equipment and integration and managed services, today announced the release of a 40Gbps optical interconnect solution. With the proliferation of servers, switches and optical ports within data center, service provider and enterprise facilities generating greater demands for bandwidth between locations, MRV's new 40G Fiber Driver module enables the interconnection of metro facilities for increased bandwidth and to conserve fiber. The new 40G Fiber Driver module allows facilities to increase the connection distance from the industry standard few hundred meters to 10 - 15 kilometers. It also reduces latency and increases processing power to meet the requirements of new cloud-based and data-intensive applications.
Connecting locations across metro areas is increasingly necessary for data centers, service providers and enterprises to share computing, storage and telecommunication resources. In addition, greater distances are required for disaster recovery and backup so critical corporate resources are not subject to loss in a single facility. To better help MRV's customers reach these longer distances and maximize bandwidth, the new 40G Fiber Driver module (EM316-2QSFP-40G) will enable media conversion and distance extension. Whether converting from one short reach 40Gbps multimode connection to a long reach single mode fiber connection or multiplexing four short reach 10Gbps multimode fiber connections to a single mode fiber connection, the new module makes it easy to add or change optics when increasing the data rate and also reduces spare parts inventory requirements with its QSFP pluggable modules.
As with the rest of the Fiber Driver product family, the new 40G module reduces power consumption compared to other industry approaches. With electrical power consumption a critical constraint in today's data center, the EM316-2QSFP-40G module enables increased equipment density in the Fiber Driver chassis and lowers this key cost factor. MRV's complete Fiber Driver solution addresses these key issues and more by improving functionality in density, power efficiency, ease-of-use, flexibility and inventory management and enables service providers, data center collocation companies, internet exchange carriers, web service companies, cloud and content providers and large enterprise data centers to meet today's need for cost-effective metro transport solutions.
The new 40G module also offers enhanced management capabilities. Each channel has built-in pseudo random bit sequence (PRBS) testing capabilities which reduces the need for external test equipment and enables the simultaneous testing of all optical channels. This saves users significant time compared to testing each channel individually. Other powerful management features of the module include digital diagnostics, link integrity notification and loopback management which are available with either the command line interface or through a GUI with MRV's management software.
"The Fiber Driver product line offers the smallest footprint and lowest power consumption of any comparable WDM platform. The addition of the 40Gbps module with its unique management and testing capabilities gives our customers a cost-effective option for very high bandwidth interconnection between facilities," said John Golub, Vice President of Global Product Line Management for MRV. "As a result, our customers will be in a stronger position to handle the continued growth of bandwidth intensive applications that are demanded by businesses around the world."
