Cisco Developing a Succession Plan

Chambers’ plan is to remain CEO for the next two-four years and then content himself with being Chairman

If Cisco CEO John Chambers, 63, steps in front of streetcar, COO Gary Moore, also 63, would take over as CEO, Chambers told Bloomberg during a drop-by at Bloomberg’s headquarters in New York Tuesday.

Chambers’ plan is to remain CEO for the next two-four years – which at the outside would make him Larry Ellison’s age now – and then content himself with being chairman.

There have of course been some doubts raised about his continued tenure – a nasty drop in sales led to a big reorganization last year – but he seems to have survived long enough to consider a succession plan with his board.

Chambers told the wire service that as many as 10 Cisco executives are under consideration and reviewed by the board quarterly. He only named three: Robert Lloyd, EVP, worldwide operations, Chuck Robbins, SVP, Americas, and Edzard Overbeek, SVP, global services.

He said to expect executives to be moved around, a process that’s already started. “I can no longer bring up my leaders in silos,” he’s quoted as saying.

Chambers has been CEO of Cisco since 1995 and presided over its glory days. It’s no longer considered the bellwether it once was. The company has lost a number of top managers in the last few years.
