Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide,  has selected Tangosol Coherence as the company's standard data grid/clustered caching software worldwide. To meet rapidly increasing demands for online access to its hotel-booking applications, Starwood is deploying Coherence to build a standard framework to access data across an extensive distributed data grid.

Starwood has been transitioning from a legacy IT system to a flexible service-oriented architecture (SOA) to take advantage of the growing industry trend of Internet booking as today's primary channel for hotel room reservations. (In 2005, a J.D. Power and Associates study showed that 41% of all hotel reservations were booked online, an increase from 36% in 2004. And, 68% of the online bookings were made through hotel Web sites, also up 17% from 2004.)

Tangosol Coherence is a key component of Starwood's SOA approach because it will permit faster online hotel bookings from a more comprehensive offering of available rooms across the company's entire inventory.
