AJAX Company JackBe Sharpens Its AJAX and SOA Focus, Expands Management Team

JackBe Adds Key Executives to Sharpen Focus On AJAX/SOA-Based Solutions

AJAX solution provider JackBe announced a significant expansion of its management team with the addition of three renowned Java/Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) experts from Sun Microsystems.

Joining JackBe as Chief Technology Officer is John Crupi, a Sun Distinguished Engineer and former CTO of Sun’s Enterprise Web Services Global Practice responsible for SOA strategy and initiatives.  Deepak Alur, a Sun Principal Engineer and Sun’s lead architect for implementing eBay’s V3 project and other large-scale enterprise projects for key clients, joins as JackBe’s VP of engineering.  Dan Malks, also a Sun Principal Engineer and a leader in SOA initiatives for firms such as Sabre and AOL, assumes the role of VP of application platform.  Malks was named Technology Innovator of the Year in 2005 for leading the development of technology infrastructure for Bono and U2’s worldwide Vertigo tour, allowing fans to enlist into the ONE campaign.

Crupi, Alur and Malks are also co-authors of “Core J2EE Patterns: Best Practices and Design Strategies,” an industry standard best-selling book focused on building Java-based enterprise applications using proven solutions.

These additions reinforce JackBe’s position in the market for enterprise-class, AJAX-based solutions that improve the usability and productivity of Web-based business applications.  JackBe’s unique combination of AJAX and SOA expertise will help customers obtain the maximum benefits from these new enterprise Web technologies.

“JackBe’s new technology leaders round out our world-class team, and bring the perfect combination of technology, innovation and go-to-market skills,” said JackBe CEO Luis Derechin.  “John, Deepak and Dan are brilliant technologists, and were central players in Sun’s efforts to deliver Java-based business solutions to major enterprises.  At JackBe, they will play a key role in defining a product and solutions architecture that will help businesses leverage the power of the Web.”

The company also announced that Yiheng Shi, former practice manager for Sun’s telecom group, has joined as VP of services.  As VP of services, Yiheng Shi will expand JackBe’s consulting team and lead the effort to combine proven AJAX technologies, SOA, implementation expertise and methodology into complete, risk-free solutions.  Shi formerly managed regional and national software consulting practices at Netscape, AOL and Sun Microsystems, and also held senior technical positions with Oracle and several systems integrators.

“JackBe is an established leader in the AJAX market space, and its ability to simultaneously attract four key players with such impressive backgrounds speaks to the great potential for AJAX in mainstream enterprises,” said Jeremy Geelan, group publisher and editorial director of SYS-CON Media.  “The depth of expertise in Java and SOA now present at JackBe clearly communicates the company’s intention to push AJAX far beyond simple user interface enhancements into enabling a whole new class of Web-based applications.”

JackBe Drives AJAX/SOA Benefits to the Enterprise Market
The new technology team reflects JackBe’s push to deliver to enterprises AJAX-based solutions that are guaranteed to dramatically improve the usability, productivity and functionality of current and new Web applications.  One of the earliest entrants into the AJAX/Rich Internet Applications space, JackBe boasts a number of customers worldwide that have already used the company’s methodology, products and services to improve Web-based applications.

“While big strides have been made in Web-based applications, we envision a future that promises far bigger and better things for organizations that invest in AJAX and SOA technologies,” said JackBe CTO John Crupi.  “JackBe’s comprehensive product set, methodology and approach, plus our successes working with many large organizations, position the company as a significant player in this market.”

The company also announced the appointment of Julius Genachowski to its board of directors.

Genachowski, most recently chief of business operations and a member of the office of Chairman Barry Diller at IAC/InterActiveCorp., brings a wealth of business experience to JackBe’s board of directors.  He spent eight years at IAC, where he helped grow the company into one of the world’s largest e-commerce and new media firms.  During his career, he has served as a member of the boards of directors of public companies including Expedia, Inc., Hotels.com and Ticketmaster; he served on the board of advisors of the video search company Truveo until its recent sale to AOL.  Genachowski currently serves on the boards of directors of The Motley Fool, Website Pros and Beliefnet.  He is the co-founder of Rock Creek Ventures, an investment and advisory services firm, and is also a founding organizer of a new commercial bank focusing on clean tech, renewable energy, green businesses and resource-efficient projects.

“We’re thrilled to have Julius join the JackBe board of directors and share his vast network and experience at growing successful companies,” said  Luis Derechin, president and CEO of JackBe.  “JackBe is at the forefront of bringing complete AJAX-based solutions to the enterprise, and having Julius on the team will help us better leverage our early leadership position and capitalize on the significant opportunity in front of us.”

Genachowski joins JackBe board members Christopher McCleary (chairman), director at Blue Chip Venture Company; Luis Derechin, president and CEO of JackBe; Adam Joseph, president and CEO of VRGateway; and Jonathan Whittle, principal, Darby Technology Ventures Group.  Ray Dizon, partner at Maryland Venture Fund/DBED, and Erik Lopez, strategic investment manager for Intel Capital, serve as board observers.

Today’s announcement continues JackBe’s momentum.  In late 2005, the company raised $6.5 million in series B funding led by Blue Chip Venture Company.  Also participating were Maryland’s Department of Economic and Business Development and original JackBe investors Darby Technology Ventures and Intel Capital.  McCleary, former chairman and CEO of both USinternetworking, Inc. (USi) and DIGEX, was named JackBe Chairman at the time of the financing.
