The company told the LA Times that Google Apps will eventually get their offline access from HTML5

Apparently Google Gears ain't gonna stick around that long. Google Apps will eventually get their offline access from HTML5, the standard-revision-in-progress, and hence the functionality will be built in rather than added on, according to a piece in the Los Angeles Times. Google told the paper, "We're continuing to support Gears so that nothing breaks for sites that use it. But we expect developers to use HTML5 for these features moving forward as it's a standards-based approach that will be available across all browsers."
