Storage management and disaster recovery software maker, Acronis, has unveiled a new online calculator that measures the potential cost savings of applying its data deduplication technology.
The deduplication calculator works by prompting users for the number of servers and workstations being backed up, the data change rate, and the cost of data storage and then using that information to estimate the storage space savings, the storage cost savings, and the percentage of savings through deduplication.
According to Acronis, a company with 10 servers and 2 TB of data that changes 5% daily and is kept for four weeks would saving about US$20,000 annually if the Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 solution was applied. However, the software licenses for the solution would amount to US$17,000 for that particular IT environment, so the net savings is actually US$3,000 per year.
Acronis Backup & Recovery 10’s deduplication option supports the process at the source or target level and offers both file level (eliminates redundant files on machines) and block level (eliminates redundant data patterns at the sector level) deduplication.
“Since our announcement, we’ve seen an explosion of interest in data deduplication from both Acronis customers and users of other technologies,” said Jason Donahue, CEO of Acronis.
“Acronis Backup & Recovery 10’s new integrated data deduplication and impressive group policy management capabilities make this product unique. The software deduplication offers similar compression rates to appliance-based deduplication solutions and has vastly decreased the volume of backups, in turn reducing storage space requirements,” said Marko Tarvainen, a global telecom specialist Finn Telecom, a beta tester of the product. “In addition, the new central management console and intuitive interface makes it much easier to oversee tasks.”
