Rumors of Apple Netbook Resurface

China Times claims that Taiwan companies are making a 9.7-inch diagonal touchscreen netbook for Apple

In tribute to the vacuum-sealed lid Apple keeps on scuttlebutt about upcoming products, US pundits have been reduced to quoting a story printed in Mandarin by the China Times saying that Taiwan companies are making a 9.7-inch diagonal touchscreen netbook for Apple to sell this October for a speculative $800 to avoid competing with the cheaper netbooks.

Steve Jobs has said he didn’t know how to make a $500 computer that wasn’t a piece of crap. He didn’t say anything about an $800 widget.

US bloggers, who have recycled previous rumors of such a device, say it’s a tablet and Venture Beat claims the chip will be one of Apple’s own, concocted by PA Semi, the low-power chip start-up it acquired last year.

It says it heard “PA Semi’s team was split into two parts, one designing portable ARM-based processors for iPhones and iPods, and another designing a processor for the tablet device.” There’s debate about the timing but no speculation at all about the operating system.

Earlier reports had it coming out next year.
