PTO Complains of Revenue Shortfall

Says its patent revenues are coming up short because of the recession

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, which has complained for years about being "patently" overburdened, now complains that its patent revenues are coming up short because of the recession.

Collections that came to $6.9 million a day in January and February, according to Reuters, fell to $6.4 million a day in April and May and $5.9 million a day last week.

It wants Congress to let it tap into the $60 million projected surplus from the trademarks side of the house and put $10 million that was supposed to go to special projects into the general operating fund.

Last week, the White House named IBM assistant general counsel David Kappos to run the patent office.
