Cloud Expo NY: Essential Open Source Software for Building the Open Cloud

Cloud computing is more than a buzz-phrase it’s a transformative IT paradigm shift. The emphasis in the cloud is on elasticity, scalability, agility and open. Not just open standards but open APIs and open source. The delivery of software is also going through a paradigm shift. Open source software was often a commoditization of a market leader; Unix to Linux or Oracle to MySQL what’s changing is that the iterative nature, user context and the motto of releasing early and often are driving real innovation in open source.
In his session at the 12th International Cloud Expo, Mark Hinkle, Senior Director, Open Source Solutions at Citrix, will cover those essential open source technologies for delivering cloud computing in the enterprise.

Cloud Expo New York: Many Clouds and APIs but One OpenStack and jclouds

In an ideal developer/systems administrator’s world, most applications would deploy seamlessly to multiple platforms and scale elastically with minimal effort bringing the unprecedented agility of the cloud within immediate reach of developer teams and IT organizations.
OpenStack, a RackSpace and NASA initiative, is now managed by an independent foundation and is supported by multiple vendors. It defines APIs for compute, storage, networking, services, monitoring, and additional infrastructure services.
jclouds is an open source library that helps you get started in the cloud and utilizes your Java or Clojure development skills. The jclouds API gives you the freedom to use portable abstractions for cloud-specific features. It's a cross-cloud toolkit that works with both public and private clouds, enabling hybrid cloud workloads.

Getting a Grasp on Services Management

HP Software today announced four products that aim to tackle the thorny reality that traditional apps deployment is broken, and that the new requirements make automation and comprehensive management an inescapable necessity.
HP is also banking on the role it can play as a neutral party to better orchestrate the apps lifecycle because -- unlike most other large enterprise software vendors -- it doesn't have a legacy applications, operating system, hypervisor, database and/or middleware heritage (and cash cows) to favor and protect. That means supporting heterogeneity in total is the imperative, not the exception, for HP.

Twitter Buys Ubalo

Twitter has bought a little four-man Palo Alto start-up called Ubalo that was started in early 2011 “to make large-scale computing easier and more accessible to a technical audience” according to its web site.
The object was to scale coding on multiple machines using the same widgetry used for a single machine with no more overhead.
Its early technology could apparently “fetch 5,000 tweets and cluster them based on the topic of discussion in 21.2 seconds. On a single computer this task takes more than 10 minutes.” It said, “Scaling Twitter search and natural language processing tasks is easy with Ubalo.”
It then moved on to R clusters and analyzed “sentiments corresponding to the latest Twitter trends, processing 25,000 tweets in parallel in 19.6 seconds.”

Apptio Closes $45 Million E Round

Apptio, which knows how to gauge the total cost of IT services, has gotten a mighty $45 million E round that it means to invest in its platform and its international expansion, immediately in Western Europe.
Counting the new money the company has now seen $136 million in funding since late 2007.
The latest round was led by new investments from funds managed by Janus Capital, the Hillman Company, and a secret unnamed global institutional investor.
Existing investors Andreessen Horowitz, Greylock Partners, Madrona Venture Group, Shasta Ventures and T. Rowe Price also kicked in.
Apptio figures “IT costs are moving from fixed to variable, computing assets are shifting from owned to shared, and business executives increasingly expect the CIO to play a more strategic role, spending less resources ‘keeping the lights on’ and more on innovation that drives the business forward.” It positions its TBM widgetry as a “must have” set of business management applications and analytics for the Global 2000.

Wal-Mart Buys OneOps

@Walmart Labs, the Silicon Valley-based technology arm of Wal-Mart global e-commerce, has bought OneOps, which automates and accelerates processes related to environment management, application deployment and data center operations monitoring.
It’s supposed to have re-imagined application management in the era of cloud computing and comes with a Platform-as-a-Service capability that should accelerate Wal-Mart’s PaaS and private cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (Iaas) strategies.
Wal-Mart will doubtless get cloud applications out of it. It said, “We are innovating on a very large scale, and OneOps brings us tools that will allow us to move even faster toward a global platform.”

Google Tops $900

Google’s stock topped $900 a share Wednesday ahead of the opening of its annual I/O developers’ conference in San Francisco, raising its market value to over $304 billion, something no high-tech firm has ever done before.
There’s the inevitable talk of it hitting $1,000.
Apparently it rose on rumors that it’s going to field a paid Spotify-like subscription music service. The Wall Street Journal says it signed distribution deals with three big music labels: Universal Music Group, Sony and Warner Music Group.
There’s also talk of a service called Google Play Games that will let gamers play each other over the Internet.
A few minutes into the three-hour-long keynote Google claimed there were 900 million active Android devices out there. It may update the $199 Nexus 7 tablet with a high-resolution screen. There are also revisions to Google Maps in the offing.

Day 2 Keynote at Cloud Expo New York | Ignite Innovation

In the old world of IT, if you didn't have hardware capacity or the budget to buy more, your project was dead in the water. Budget constraints can leave some of the best, most creative and most ingenious innovations on the cutting room floor. It’s a true dilemma for developers and innovators – why spend the time creating, when a project could be abandoned in a blink? That was the old world. In the new world of IT, developers rule. They have access to resources they can spin up instantly.
A hybrid cloud ignites innovation and empowers developers to focus on what they need. A hybrid cloud blends the best of all worlds, public cloud, private cloud and dedicated servers to fit the needs of developers and offer the ideal environment for each app and workload without the constraints of a one-size-fits-all cloud.

Dell Essentially Pre-Announces

Dell Tuesday moved up its fiscal Q1 earnings call up five days to this Thursday May 16 at 4:45 p.m. ET. It didn’t say why it changed the schedule.
CNBC’s David Faber, who was first out with the news, said he heard Dell is going to come with earnings below consensus and that the miss is big enough for Dell to want to get the word out to the market as quickly as possible.
Dell was expected to make 35 cents a share on $13.5 billion in revenues.
Now the Wall Street Journal says it looks like 20 cents on $14 billion.
The higher-than-expected top line will pass muster, but its income has reportedly been negatively impacted by the PC slowdown and may only amount to $600 million.

Box Acquires Crocodoc

Box, the cloud storage start-up getting close to going public, has acquired Crocodoc and its HTML5 document rendering and viewing solution.
The widgetry works on PDF, Word and other files without Flash or plug-ins. The transformed files can’t be edited.
Box said Crocodoc’s technology will be “deeply integrated” into its cloud content collaboration service, replacing its existing widgetry, and still be a standalone platform for HTML5 document viewing on third-party applications across the web and mobile devices via its API.
Box is also going to invest in the technology and ecosystem.
The whole Crocodoc team will join Box and co-founder and CEO Ryan Damico will be Box’ platform director.

Dell Special Committee Wants Specifics from Icahn

If Carl Icahn wants to buy out Dell he’s going to have to cough up some specific plans for the board’s special committee handling the company’s attempt to go private, a strategy Icahn deems akin to “grand theft.”
Rather than take Michael Dell and Silver Lake Partners’ $13.65 a share, on Friday Icahn and Southeastern Management, which together control about 13% of the firm, proposed letting shareholders keep at least some of their shares and get another $12 a share in cash or stock funded by a load of debt plus Dell’s bank account.
One of the things the special committee wants to know is who exactly Icahn sees running the company since Friday afternoon he told both Bloomberg TV and CNBC it wasn’t going to be Michael Dell.
Icahn also means to start a proxy fight for control of the board.
It also wants to know if Icahn and Southeastern are for real.

OpenStack Cells is one of the most anticipated features in Grizzly, the seventh release of the open source software that offers more block storage options and scalability. It has been running in production at Rackspace for more than a year.
In his session at the 12th International Cloud Expo, Wayne Walls, OpenStack Developer Advocate at Rackspace Hosting, will discuss nova cells and how it is changing the way you design your cloud applications and infrastructure. He will explain how OpenStack Cells gives added flexibility in application and infrastructure design. He will also enlighten attendees on how it is similar to “zones” at AWS, and how OpenStack Cells helps enable the hybrid cloud and allow specialized workload distribution.

Cloud Expo New York: Ten Myths of Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is transforming the way businesses think about and leverage technology. As a result, the general understanding of cloud computing has come a long way in a short time. However, there are still many misconceptions about what cloud computing is and what it can do for businesses that adopt this game-changing computing model.
In his General Session at the 12th International Cloud Expo, Gene Eun, Senior Director, Oracle Cloud at Oracle, will discuss and dispel some of the common myths about cloud computing that still exist today. Attendees will learn about the flexibility and choice that cloud can offer so that they can make more informed decisions when choosing cloud for their businesses.

Cloud Expo New York: The Who, What and How of Selling Cloud to SMBs

Cloud enables SMBs to access new, scalable resources – previously only available to enterprises – in flexible and cost-effective ways. McKinsey’s SMB Cloud Report projects the public cloud market to reach $40-$50 billion by 2015, with SMBs comprising 65% of public cloud spending in 2015. But selling cloud to SMBs raises the questions of who, what and how.
In her session at the 12th International Cloud Expo, Manjula Talreja, VP of Cisco’s Global Cloud Business Development Team, will discuss the importance of knowing who SMBs are through market segmentation; understanding what cloud services they will consume; and understanding how best to sell to SMBs and from which channels.

Microsoft Wants Nook: TechCrunch

Microsoft wants to buy Nook Media LLC, the Barnes & Noble’s digital and college books joint venture, for a billion dollars according to TechCrunch, which says it’s got internal documents to prove it.
With Windows 8 in mind Microsoft bought 16.8% of the operation last year for $300 million plus another $180 million due sometime for Windows 8 content.
Apparently it now just wants the e-book piece as well as Nook’s e-readers and tablets. That digital territory includes movies, TV, comics and apps.
TechCrunch says Nook Media means to discontinue its Microsoft-opposing Android-based tablet business by the end of its fiscal 2014 year and move Nook content through apps on “third-party partner” devices although it just signed a deal to get Google Play and the entire Google mobile stack – Gmail, Chrome, YouTube and Google Maps – onto the platform.

Forget Managing Each VM; Single Image’s the Ticket

CloudVolumes started out a couple of years ago as SnapVolumes and shed its stealth cocoon in November when it announced $2.3 million in seed financing and began beta testing its enterprise-class Instant Workload Management (IWM) solution to what IDC has dubbed the “virtualization management gap.”
CloudVolumes began because, like IDC, it reckoned there was no way to manage the virtual sprawl that’s being created with the processes and tools that are in place. The traditional tools that managed applications in the world of physical servers and desktops aren’t suited to virtual environments.
IDC has even imagined the virtualization and cloud markets stalling and people dialing back while they wait for or seek management solutions.

Microsoft Blue over Windows 8, Retooling Underway

Roughly six months after Windows 8 came out at the end of October, Microsoft Tuesday confirmed reports that it’s been tinkering with the operating system to make it more popular.
The radical redesign is supposed to have confused the buying public and created enough of a learning curve that IDC blamed the widgetry for the historic 14% drop in PC sales last quarter.
As a result, Microsoft has been making changes in an upgrade called Windows Blue.
Trying to deflect more negative perceptions, Tami Reller, co-captain of Microsoft’s Windows unit, told the press, “Frankly we…didn’t get everything we dreamed of done in the first release.”
She also claimed that Microsoft knew it might have to make immediate adjustments since Windows 8 was so different from the traditional Windows.

Cloud Expo New York: Cloudy with a Chance of… Success

It’s a standard refrain heard in enterprise IT departments around the world – “I want to move to the cloud, but what about data security, uptime and user response time across a nearly infinite number of devices to support?” Because of this, fear gets in the way and enterprises reap only a small percentage of the potential benefits that can be gained through cloud adoption.
In his General Session at the 12th International Cloud Expo, Gary Ballabio, Product Line Director at Akamai Technologies, will examine a variety of strategies you can employ to make your cloud architecture better performing, more secure and available. Learn best practices for achieving the optimal reliability for applications running in the cloud as well as maintaining or increasing the velocity of real-time data transfers happening in support of Big Data initiatives.

Lunch Keynote at Cloud Expo | Strategies for App Delivery in the Cloud Era

Cloud computing continues to gain momentum as enterprises of all sizes and across all industries seek to harness the business agility promised by this computing model. Despite its long-accepted benefits, the cloud has also fallen victim to performance and reliability challenges, combined with a perceived lack of security. As a result this has led to slower predicted growth and adoption of this still promising infrastructure methodology.
In his Lunch Keynote at the 12th International Cloud Expo, Neil Cohen, Akamai’s Vice President of Global Product Marketing, will discuss how to overcome these challenges, and the role application delivery solutions play in optimizing public and hybrid cloud architectures without sacrificing performance, security or control.

Icahn’s Back with a New Deal for Dell

Activist shareholder Carl Icahn and another of Dell’s large shareholders, Southeastern Asset Management, have come up with a new alternative proposal to Michael Dell’s $24.4 billion buy-out offer to take the company private.
The pair sent the special committee of Dell’s board another letter proposing to let shareholders keep their stock in the company or get an additional $12 a share in cash and stock. The pay-out or leveraged recapitalization would come out of Dell’s existing cash and $5.2 billion in new debt.
Southeastern will lose a packet of money if Michael Dell’s $13.65-a-share deal with Silver Lake Partners prevails. Icahn, Southeastern and some other large holders have claimed that the $13.65-a-share offer the board accepted in February is too cheap.
